Let me just say, as an aspiring photo hobbyist, I am a fan of Humans of New York (HONY). I love the portraits and their stories, reminding us that we are more alike than we are different, no matter where we live. Inspired by this, I thought of taking portraits of the children who attend our church outreaches. I never knew how powerful a camera could be until today. During regular church events, these children are normally shy and reserved. But in this workshop, while I took their photos on their street, as I focused the lens on them, they were very open and willing to share with me their hopes and dreams, and even some of their struggles. Giving the right kind of attention really does make a difference to a child’s self-confidence.
“My dream is to finish college, and get a degree. I want to be able to teach my siblings. I also want my family to have a house of our own.”
“All I want is to finish college and become a seaman. That way I can help my family.”
“I want to be an engineer, because I want to be able to build my dream house, with a garden and great view.”
“I want to be a teacher someday.”
“I wish to become a teacher, but first I have to finish college. The only problems I have are when my parents fight each other, and when my siblings fight me.”
“I hope I can finish my studies. I hope Gabriel and I can become good friends. I hope his brother Tim and I will stop fighting.”
“My wish is to get a good education, and for my parents to stop fighting.”
“I hope and pray my brother will get well, and that my siblings and I will be able to finish our studies. I want to be a teacher so I could take care of my parents. Even though sometimes my parents and siblings don’t always agree with me, I still love them.”
“I want to be a seaman, and be able to buy things for my family.”
“I want to finish college, so that I can land a good job someday.”
“I want to be a pilot because I want to visit other countries. If that doesn’t happen, then I hope I can start my own company.”
